From Floppy Disks to the Cloud: Reflecting on Computing's Evolution

I recently came across old 5.25" floppy disks from my first home PC, an IBM 8086 with an 8 MHz CPU, 640KB of RAM, and a 20MB hard drive. It’s incredible to think that this was my initiation into the world of computing 25 years ago. Back then, we heavily relied on the command line interface to interact with machines, and I have to say, it was a lot of fun.

These days, as a Cloud and DevOps Practice Director, I spend my time working with cloud-based infrastructure and applications, particularly in Microsoft Azure. But sometimes, I find myself reminiscing about those early days of computing and the simplicity and power of the command line interface.

In some ways, I see a connection between the command line interface of DOS and the Azure Cloud Console. Both allow us to interact with machines and infrastructure at a deeper level, and both require a certain level of technical expertise to use effectively. Of course, the Cloud Console has many more features and capabilities than DOS ever did, but I still appreciate the similarities.

As I hold this old floppy disk in my hand, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for those early days of computing. Microsoft has finished migration of Microsoft to Microsoft Azure recently. The eight-year journey covered more than 600 internal services and solutions migration.
